1. Pure Flush FAQ

Q1. If I complete Chinitsu with melds (Chi/Pon), does 'Pinfu' still apply?

A. No, it does not. Pinfu is a closed-only (Menzen) Yaku. If you call Chi or Pon, Pinfu cannot combine with Chinitsu, leaving you with open Chinitsu base value (5 Han).

Q2. When holding many suit tiles, how should I choose between calling Chi vs. Pon?

A. Prioritize bottleneck shapes. Use Chi to fix bad shapes like Penchan (1-2) or Kanchan (1-3) into complete sequences. Use Pon when you want to lock in triplets and simplify hand structure quickly. Always ensure at least a 2-sided wait remains after calling.

Q3. What is the score value when Tanyao (All Simples) combines with Chinitsu?

A. 6 Han when open, 7 Han when closed. Excluding 1s and 9s adds Tanyao (+1 Han). An open hand becomes 5 + 1 = 6 Han (Haneman); a closed hand becomes 6 + 1 = 7 Han (Haneman/Baiman).

Q4. Multi-waits are too confusing to memorize. Any tips for quick reading?

A. Apply the 13-Tile Isolation Method. Set aside complete triplets (Anko) or isolated sequences (e.g., 1-2-3) to the edge, then analyze the remaining 4-to-7 tile structure first to reduce mental overload.

2. Multi-Wait Practice Quizzes

Calculate the winning tiles (waits) for each tenpai hand below!

Question 1 [Difficulty: Easy]

Standard 2-Sided Wait

What are the winning tiles for this 13-tile Circle (Pin) hand?

1 Pin 1 Pin 1 Pin 2 Pin 3 Pin 4 Pin 4 Pin 5 Pin 7 Pin 8 Pin 9 Pin 9 Pin 9 Pin
?
👉 Show Answer & Solution

Answer: 3 Pin 6 Pin (2 Types)

Solution:

  • Isolate completed blocks: 111 Pin (Anko), 789 Pin (Sequence), and 99 Pin (Pair).
  • The remaining 5 middle tiles are 2-3-4-4-5 Pin.
  • Taking 2-3-4 leaves 4-5 Pin (ryanmen wait on 3 and 6); taking 3-4-5 leaves 2-4 Pin (kanchan wait on 3).
  • Therefore, the winning tiles are 3 Pin and 6 Pin.

Question 2 [Difficulty: Medium]

3-Sided Complex Wait

What are the winning tiles for this 13-tile Character (Man) hand?

2 Man 2 Man 3 Man 4 Man 4 Man 5 Man 6 Man 7 Man 7 Man 7 Man 8 Man 8 Man 8 Man
?
👉 Show Answer & Solution

Answer: 2 Man 3 Man 5 Man (3 Types)

Solution:

  • Decompose 6-7-7-7-8-8-8 Man into 777 (or 888) Anko + 678 sequence.
  • Case A (Fixing 888 Anko + 77 Pair): Remaining tiles 2-2-3-4-4-5-6-7 leave a kanchan wait on 3 Man.
  • Case B (Fixing 777 Anko + 888 Anko): Remaining tiles 2-2-3-4-4-5-6 form 456 sequence and 2234, yielding a ryanmen wait on 2 Man and 5 Man.
  • Total winning tiles: 2 Man, 3 Man, 5 Man.
